Key Findings Reveal U.S. Dominance in the Virtual School Market
Although students have the potential to benefit from virtual schools around the world, the HTF’s market study found that virtual schools are currently far more popular in the United States than anywhere else in the world. In 2017, the United States held a market share of 93.2%, followed by Canada with 3.8%. European Union nations held less than 1% of the total market share for virtual schools during this period. However, the study does note that virtual schools are beginning to gain popularity in both Japan and China.
Not surprisingly, K12 Inc and Connections Academy are still the market leaders on the for-profit side of the virtual school market. According to the report, in 2017, they took a total market share of 44%. Despite its recent troubles, Florida Virtual School (FLVS) remains a leader on the non-profit side of the virtual school market, taking 11.3% of the market share in 2017.

While one might assume that these ongoing scandals would have a negative impact on the virtual school market, to date, there are no clear indications of the short- or long-term market impact.
